WSOP Day 5: $10,000 Mixed Championship

Well, well, well, yesterday's action was long and boring at times, but we made it to the final eight players. Here are the players, seats, and chip counts going into the final table.

Seat 1: James Mackey (Columbia, Missouri) 742,000
Seat 2: Matt Glantz (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) 1,150,000
Seat 3: Sam Farha (Houston, Texas) 374,500
Seat 4: Michael DeMichele (Las Vegas, Nevada) 434,000
Seat 5: Tom Dwan (Edison, New Jersey) 642,000
Seat 6: Eli Elezra (Henderson, Nevada) 76,000
Seat 7: Anthony Rivera (Henderson, Nevada) 274,000
Seat 8: Jeff Madsen (Los Angeles, California) 149,000

Madsen was down to only a few thousand chips on the bubble and was able to battle it back to make it to the final table. He did really well in most games and it's good to see the young players doing well with the mixed games. Dwan, or better known as "durrrr" is just a nutball. This guy raises and reraises with almost any two cards and was really the laugh of the tournament from the other players, particularly Gus Hansen. After a crazy hand in PLO on day one of the event, Gus just can't seem to think that Dwan is anything but a luckbox. Here's how that hand went down:

EP raised 3.5x preflop
Gus called from MP
Dwan then shoved all in from the BB
EP called
Gus called

Flop: 4 5 6, rainbow.
EP checked
Gus bet and ended up getting it all in with the EP player

Dwan: T-8-7-5
EP: A-A-x-x
Gus: K-K-7-6

On the turn, a 3 hit and ended up giving Gus a straight to the seven for the side pot. Dwan more than triple with the nut straight. Dwan was then bashed and laughed at by a few players at the table.

Gus: "Durrrr, I know you're the world's best PLO player but... honestly, what is the point of pushing there?"

Dwan: "Because I know you're not folding now, but you'll fold most flops and he (the other player) will shove most flops."

Gus: "Let me tell you, this guy has no fold option whatsoever."

EPr: "What the heck were you doing?"

Dwan: "I think my equity is good there."

Gus: "Really?!?! You call that equity?"

Dwan: "Yeah, I think I even shove there online. If it's a PLO tournament online I shove."

Gus and the rest of the table looked confused as Dwan stacked his chips.

Dwan: "There's also only 16 minutes left in the day. That was a factor also. I don't want to come back tomorrow with only 7,000 chips."

I guess he has a point, but I really don't understand the play here. Dwan is saying that if he shoves here, he knows both the EP player and Gus will call, building a big pot for him to try and triple up and more. And then he felt he knew that the EP would bet most flops and Gus would fold, leaving Dwan heads up. Now, this strategy seems fine and a good plan, but with T-8-7-5? It wasn't even double suited. It really confused me.

Going into the second day, this hand was still bugging Gus, as he talked about it to just about everyone that would listen. What was even more funny seemed to be Dwan's play on this day as well. There were multiple players referring to Dwan as the person that invented PLO and NLHE... as a joke of course. They were laughing at some of his plays and at one point, Gus was sitting right next to Dwan and said, "I can't wait until PLO." and then sat back in his chair so Dwan couldn't see him and began licking his lips. It was quite enjoyable to hear all the banter at the table. There were also a couple more hands that really made people question whether or not Dwan had a fold option in his mind.

Mackey, Glantz, and DeMichele are all playing really solid poker. I'll also include Dwan in my possible picks for the the winners. Out of those four players, I'll go with this prediction:

1. Michael DeMichele
2. Matt Glantz
3. Tom "durrrr" Dwan

If Sammy Farha can get some chips, I have a feeling Dwan and him are really going to battle it out. The same for Eli Elezra as the big cash game pros don't seem to have much respect for Dwan's game. I have a feeling Dwan may shape up to be the next Andy Beal type character for the pros to feast on.

I'll have some good topics to talk about later. The final table will begin at 4pm PDT and I believe it's on WSOP Live, but don't mark my words.

A level? Not even sure what that means.

But trust me, Dwan has a ton of money and a little experience compared to the pros in the mixed games. He also has a ton of gamble in him and won't mind mixing it up with them. I'm just implying that with the reputation he's getting here, he may be playing some big games with the pros fairly soon and they will beat him. Dwan will adapt and learn though and he'll certainly improve.
